US comments came in response to deal by Canada PM Carney to allow 49,000 EVs into Canada at 15% tariff, down from 100%.
Carney is on a four-day trip to China, the first by a Canadian PM since 2017, in a move to thaw tense relations.
But car makers have urged an extension to the USMCA, saying it is crucial to US auto production.
