He writes news, features and analysis from the field with a focus on war and conflict. Nils has reported extensively on the war in Ukraine for Al Jazeera, including during the build-up to and onset of the war. He is also a photographer and his work focuses on the human cost of conflict, unrest and natural disasters. In 2016, he reported from Iraq during ISIL’s control of significant territories, including from Mosul. He has also previously reported from Turkey, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Jordan, Belarus, Israel, Palestine and Syria. He has also covered Nigeria’s mental health crisis. In 2021, he was shortlisted for the Fetisov Journalism Awards for his story about honour-based violence in Iraq, the UK and Sweden. In 2023, he received a gold medal from the Anthem Awards, alongside co-author Dallia M Abdelmoniem, for an Al Jazeera article on the use of rape as a weapon of war in Sudan.
